The Illusion of the Sticker Price

Performance Scorecarding

Suppliers are continuously graded. Criteria such as delivery speed, adherence to quality standards, and flexibility during crises are compiled into a scorecard. Just as a student passes or fails a grade based on their final report card, suppliers with consistently low scores are warned or completely replaced.

Geopolitical and Systemic Risks

Supply chain managers must constantly consider how a storm or a political crisis on the other side of the planet will impact their factories. Relying on a single supplier (Single Sourcing) ties the entire survival of the company to that one vendor's fate. Therefore, companies insure themselves by finding backup suppliers (Dual Sourcing) on different continents who can produce the exact same part. You simply do not embark on a cross-country road trip without a spare tire.
