Bill Of Materials (BOM) And Routing
A perfect production system is one that can define the existential purpose and journey of even the smallest bolt with flawless mathematics; an undefined part is the dark matter of manufacturing.
The cornerstone of production engineering is the art of breaking down a complex end product into manufacturable, measurable, and manageable sub-components. The Bill of Materials (BOM) is the genetic map of a product. It shows the quantity, specification, and hierarchical link of every single part, from the engine block of a car to the smallest washer attached to that block. If the hierarchy is missing, chaos ensues on the shop floor.
However, knowing only "what" a product consists of is not enough; knowing "in what order" and "on which machines" these parts will be processed is equally critical. This is where Routing comes into play. Routing is the sequence of sequential operational steps that raw material follows from the moment it enters the factory until it emerges as a finished product. Which machine will be used and how long it will take (Setup and Cycle Time) are defined on these routes. Without a robust BOM and an optimized route, ERP systems will only produce garbage data.
