The "My Machine" Mindset

Autonomous Maintenance is the concept of the operator being responsible for the daily health of the equipment they use. The goal is not to turn the operator into a maintenance engineer; the goal is to ensure the operator knows their machine so well that they can sense any abnormality (sound, vibration, smell, heat) before it turns into a professional breakdown.

There are 7 steps to transition from the traditional "fix it when it breaks" mentality to the "prevent it from breaking" mentality, but the core philosophy lies in the first three steps:

  1. Initial Cleaning: Cleaning is not a 5S ritual; it is an Inspection method. While cleaning the machine's aged oil and grime, the operator discovers hidden cracks, loose bolts, and oil leaks with their own hands.
  2. Elimination of Sources of Contamination: To prevent the cleaned machine from getting dirty again, leaking gaskets are replaced, and shields are built for splashing oil. The machine's habit of "soiling itself" is eradicated.
  3. Cleaning, Lubrication, and Inspection Standards: Standards are created for what, where, how, and in how much time the operator will check during each shift (supported by Visual Control Poka Yokes).

The Liberation of the Maintenance Department

When operators take over routine checks and simple interventions, the company's maintenance team gains a massive amount of time. No longer burdened with putting out fires, maintenance technicians can focus on high-value-added engineering tasks such as Planned Maintenance and Early Equipment Management (machine design improvement).

Autonomous maintenance improves the equipment not only physically but also culturally. An operator who is responsible for the health of their own machine will never abuse that machine again. Autonomous Maintenance is a partnership agreement built on respect between the machine and the human.
