The Mechanical Anchor Locking in Perfection

"Where there is no standard, there can be no Kaizen." This famous quote by Taiichi Ohno summarizes the scientific foundation of the Toyota Production System. When most people hear the word "standardization," they imagine robotic workers, rigid rules, and the death of creativity. However, in TPS, standardized work is not a prison for creativity, but a springboard for it.

If three different people doing a job do it in three different ways, there is no "process"; there are only "personal habits."

The Best Current Method

Standardized Work is the documentation of the currently known safest, easiest, and most efficient way to do a job. It is not a theoretical rulebook imposed from the top down (from engineers to workers); it is created directly on the shop floor (Gemba) using the experiences of the operators actually doing the work.

Standardized work has three main elements:

  1. Takt Time: The rate at which the work must be completed (The rhythm of the customer).
  2. Work Sequence: The precise and specific sequence of steps the operator will follow while performing the job. It can be detailed down to which hand to use when.
  3. Standard In-Process Stock: The minimum number of parts that must be at the machine or station to keep the process flowing smoothly.

The Fragility and Strength of the Standard

Once a standard is established, it guarantees that no matter who does the job, the result will be of the exact same quality and completed in the exact same amount of time. Unevenness (Mura) is eliminated. However, the true magic of standardized work is its openness to change.

If you have no standard, you cannot know if an improvement (Kaizen) you made actually worked (because you cannot measure it). The standard is a baseline. If an operator discovers a better method while applying the standard work sequence, this new method is tested, verified, and if it truly is better, it becomes the new standard.

Therefore, standards are not "rules never to be changed again," but "the best practices valid until the next improvement." Continuous evolution progresses by tearing down the old standard and establishing a more perfect new one.
